Website Visitors Drop After Switch to HTTPS

August 28, 2014/2 Comments/in SEO/by Michael David

Google announced recently that it would be rewarding websites converting to https by increased ranking position.

Ok, sure, fine, WHATEVER.

But wait, maybe this is a good thing? Let me spend 6 or 7 hours on this to find out.

Thanks for Nothing, Google

Well, things didn’t work out for us on one of our web properties. We converted to HTTPS on the day after Google’s announcement. Our traffic declined by over 18% compared to the same period in the prior month (comparing 14 days of traffic from a Thursday to a Wednesday, to avoid weekend/weekday fluctuations).

HTTPS Sucks

Conclusion: I Heart Hate You, Google

I would check your server response (not website load speed). In my case, website slowed down really bad with HTTPS

    Hey Michael,

yeah, loads of people tried it right away and had the same experience as you did e.g. blogpost by JitBit (also very funny).

The Google “news” got a lot of my clients all worked up. Preferably they would’ve switched a day after the announcement. I am all about wait, test and see.

But testing is what it all about…

    Greetings from Austria,

    Alexander
